A Message From The President

The month of March is full of action! This past month we changed our clocks to "spring forward", got caught up in March Madness (GO SPARTANS!) in the sports media and in poetry: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb! We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of that lamb, the lion roared yesterday here in Michigan and dropped some fresh snow, reminding us that change is constant and we had better not assume anything! There has been a lot of change across our country these past few months and for some of you, it has been positive and for others, the opposite. I want to let all of you know that as National Anesthesia prepares to celebrate their 20th Anniversary we are your steadfast, constant partner. Our rates remain low, our superior customer service soars above the other agencies and we continue to grow our business.

We remain a strong leader in the temporary and permanent anesthesia staffing industry and are ready to help you however you may need us. Contact us today at 800-642-1999 see for yourself why over 70 percent of our business is comprised of repeat business.

Quote of the Month

Talent alone won't make you a success. Neither will being in the right place at the right time, unless you are ready. The most important question is: 'Are you ready?'

----- Johnny Carson

Having a Baby: Exercise May Reduce Need for an Epidural

In addition to its other well-known benefits, exercise during pregnancy may help women reduce the need for anesthesia when they give birth, a small study has found.

Researchers assigned 34 pregnant women to a water aerobics exercise program three times a week, 50 minutes a session, and 37 to a sedentary control group matched for age, weight, education, previous births and body mass before pregnancy. Women in both groups were healthy and in good physical condition, and fitness as measured by oxygen consumption and cardiac output was higher in both groups in the second trimester, returning to pre- pregnancy levels during the third. The study appears in the Nov. 21 issue of Reproductive Health.

There was no difference between the two groups in length of labor, type of delivery or health of the newborn, and the program showed no effect on the cardiovascular capacity of the women. But only 27 percent of the exercisers, compared with 65 percent of the controls, requested pain medication during labor.

"This study points to a small advantage regarding the need for epidural anesthesia," said the lead author, Rosa I. Pereira of the University of Campinas in Brazil. "Healthy women with a low-risk pregnancy should practice regular moderate physical exercise during pregnancy."

2009 Spring NEANA Conference

Account managers Christi Brewer and Tina Pedersen were happy to represent National Anesthesia Services at the Spring NEANA Conference in Burlington, MA this past weekend. Many thanks to all the CRNAs who stopped by to visit our booth, we enjoyed spending some quality time putting faces to the names of those people we talk to daily. We'd also like to send a special thank you out to all of you who offered great travel tips on what to see and do in Boston! With some serious navigation efforts on Christi's part, and a few split-second maneuvers by Tina, we successfully made our way into the city on Saturday night and enjoyed all the sights and plenty of good food! As for our raffle, the winner is... Elizabeth Stansberry, CRNA! You're iHome FM Radio / Charging Station is on it's way to you by mail. Thanks again, and we hope to see you all again soon!
