Baseball Fun Facts:

Baseball is called "America's Pastime" because during the late 19th and early 20th century it was probably the most widely played sport in the country.

The first World Series was played between Pittsburgh and Boston in 1903 and was a nine-game series. Boston won the series 5-3.

The first radio broadcast of the World Series was in 1922; first TV broadcast was in 1947.

The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series titles, which is more than any other team.

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. didn't miss a game in 16 years; he played 2,632 consecutive games from April 30, 1982 to September 19, 1988.

Each baseball game has 12,386,344 possible plays.

Each baseball can only be used one time in a MLB game.

Babe Ruth put a cabbage leaf under his hat during every game. He would change it for a new one every two innings.

Fenway Park in Boston, MA is the oldest baseball stadium still in use.

The longest baseball game was between the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers which lasted for eight hours and six minutes.

More Baseball Fun Facts:

Before every game, umpires must rub around 6 dozen baseballs to get rid of the shine on the balls.

Wrigley Field in Chicago was the last field to install lights.

Pitcher Nolan Ryan played 27 seasons in MLB and struck out more batters in his career than any other pitcher.

Al Kaline is considered to be one of the games' greatest outfielders. He played his whole career (22 seasons) with the Detroit Tigers.

Since 1903, the World Series has been played every year except for 1904 and 1994. The games continued despite World War I, World War II, the Great Depression, and the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. In 1904, the owner of the New York Giants (also known as the San Francisco Giants) refused to let his team play. In 1994, the season was cancelled during a players strike.

A Message from the President
Steve

Happy Fourth of July! Finally we're enjoying some wonderful summer weather here in Michigan. For us, summer in Detroit means long, warm evenings watching the Tigers play at Comerica Park, so this month's "fun facts" feature a baseball theme.

Besides the current success of the Tigers, we're also feeling motivated by a presentation we attended this week where we listened to such inspiring speakers as Rudy Giuliani and General Colin Powell. We all came away eager to put their sound advice into action in both our professional and personal lives. You can read more about this exciting day below.

Someone who also inspires us deeply but who sadly didn't make it to Detroit this week is Oprah Winfrey. We hope you find inspiration in this article where she describes twenty things in her life that she knows for sure. We recently tried this interesting exercise ourselves and were both inspired and intrigued by each other's replies.

A thread that runs through all the advice we've gleaned this month is the importance of fostering close personal relationships. We at National pride ourselves on our rapport with our "family" of health care providers, some of whom have been working with us for many years. Quote of the month

"I've got my faults, but living in the past is not one of them. There's no future in it."

GET MOTIVATED!

On June 29th the National team ventured out to the Palace of Auburn Hills to attend the Get Motivated Business Seminar. We had the privilege of listening to some of the most powerful leaders in business and our nation. We spent the day being inspired by the likes of General Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Robert Schuller, Lou Holtz, and Bill Cosby, just to name a few! Along with their words of wisdom, these men renewed our already firm belief in the power of positive thinking and our strong commitment to being the best we can possibly be to ourselves, our families, friends and to YOU. We hope that we can take what we learned and continue to improve upon the relationships we have with the individuals we work with across the country.

The Top 20 Things Oprah Knows for Sure

Since the day the late Gene Siskel asked me, "What do you know for sure?" and I got all flustered and started stuttering and couldn't come up with an answer, I've never stopped asking myself that question. And every month I must find yet another answer. Some months I feel I hardly know a thing, and I'm always pressed to make the deadline for this column. This time around, I looked back and came up with my all-time top 20:
1. What you put out comes back all the time, no matter what. (This is my creed.)

2. You define your own life. Don't let other people write your script.

3. Whatever someone did to you in the past has no power over the present. Only you give it power.

4. When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. (A lesson from Maya Angelou.)

5. Worrying is wasted time. Use the same energy for doing something about whatever worries you.

6. What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for. You become what you believe.

7. If the only prayer you ever say is thank you, that will be enough. (From the German theologian and humanist Meister Eckhart.)

8. The happiness you feel is in direct proportion to the love you give.

9. Failure is a signpost to turn you in another direction.

10. If you make a choice that goes against what everyone else thinks, the world will not fall apart.

11. Trust your instincts. Intuition doesn't lie.

12. Love yourself and then learn to extend that love to others in every encounter.

13. Let passion drive your profession.

14. Find a way to get paid for doing what you love. Then every paycheck will be a bonus.

15. Love doesn't hurt. It feels really good.

16. Every day brings a chance to start over.

17. Being a mother is the hardest job on earth. Women everywhere must declare it so.

18. Doubt means don't. Don't move. Don't answer. Don't rush forward.

19. When you don't know what to do, get still. The answer will come.

20. "Trouble don't last always." (A line from a Negro spiritual, which calls to mind another favorite: This, too, shall pass.)

So thanks, Gene, for asking me the question. The answer continues...
